We work with these people because they're great at what they do and we enjoy working with them first and foremost. Spence, Dauberman, and James Wan initially struggled with trying to recreate the Warrens' home from the previous films since there wasn't any strict continuity. So rather than continue to string together all the different versions to form a hodgepodge form of the Warrens' house, Spence redesigned everything.
That's why it felt right to step up and direct this one because I have a lot of shorthand with these people and they're so good at what they do. That just felt like a huge advantage to have that going into it, knowing how great everybody is at their job. It's not for it to have a uniform look across the movies.
'Annabelle Comes Home' Cast on Why It's So Hard to Play Scared

Pictures announced that a then-untitled film in the Conjuring Universe franchise would be released on July 3, 2019. It's a standard operating procedure for the "fun best friend" to be killed off rather early in horror movies. WithAnnabelle Comes Home, the Conjuring film universe gets a lighter, fun-filled entry led by a cast of young actresses and new characters build around the Warren family. Set in the same year asThe Conjuring,Annabelle Comes Home picks up with demonologists, paranormal investigators and loving parents, the Warrens , when their growing reputation is starting to take a toll on their daughter, Judy . But when the Warrens head away for the night, leaving Judy with her baby sitter Mary Ellen and Mary Ellen's rebellious BFF Daniella , the demonic doll Annabell comes out to play, unleashing a funhouse of horrors on the young girls.

Principal photography commenced by mid-October and officially wrapped in December 2018 inLos Angeles. I think this third Annabelle movie was trying to keep the cycle of Conjuverse going, and somehow, it successfully did. The attention to detail through design, the cinematography, and the film score makes the movie look and feels very much retro, and the effort with it, is paid-off. It also emphasize the theme about facing-your-fears, the compassion of friendship, and the subtle message of obidience. However, this sort of emphasis makes the natural essence of turmoil within the movie's concept blurry, unheavy and inconsequential. The most things it failed to do is to keep the viewers' engagement with the characters.
Mary Ellen avoids thinking about the Warrens' work because she's afraid of that world, which plays into her backstory. While Mary Ellen's backstory wasn't discussed on set, it's certainly something that audiences will discover in watching Annabelle Comes Home. Even though joining the Conjuring Universe was immensely exciting for Iseman, she admitted to feeling a bit out of her element. She always thought of doing a horror slasher film, because she didn't want to "mess with the devil."

Saying anything beyond that, such as revealing why her character feels the need to know more about morbid stories (including watching the Warrens' tapes), would be spoiling the film.
